It is said that the Perilla seeds form an essential part of the very well known seven spices of Japan, which had originated more than 300 years ago in Kyoto. The green perilla leaves are often wrapped around sushi or served with "sashimi" as a garnish. They can also be added to soups, tempura or dried and sprinkled over your favorite rice. In Japan the chefs add red perilla to tofu or bean curd dishes or use it wrapped around pieces of meat.

IMPORTANT SOWING INFORMATION ABOUT PERILLA SEEDS

One of the challenges in growing Perilla is to handle the seed germination issue.

Perilla seeds have dormant characteristics and seeds will not germinate during this period.
The dormant period can begin any time just after the fresh seeds harvested , seeds will have good germination after this dormant period finished.
Therefore many experienced farmers prefer to use post-dormant old seeds than pre-dormant fresh seeds in planting.
It has been reported that the dormant period can be broken and shortened if seeds kept in a low temperature, 35-45 F, for at least 1-3 months.
Therefore it is suggested to seal seeds in a bag and store it in a refrigerator (not freezer) for at least 1-3 months, if not to be planting soon.
For obtaining the best and uniform germination possible, it is suggested to soak seeds overnight before sowing, however keep the soil moist during the germination period.
Sow the Perilla Seeds 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost in your zone. See the USDA form below to determine approximant date.
Perilla Seeds require light to germinate and should NOT be covered , but do keep the soil moist during the germination by misting the soil immediately after sowing and keep the soil moist until germination occurs.
Germination takes about 7-14 days depending on the light and soil temperature.
The seedlings can be thinned or transplanted when they have several sets of mature leaves.
