Endive Seeds
Vegetable Garden - Tips on Growing Endive From Seed
Endive is a curly green leaf plant which can be used with lettuce and spinach in a salad. Unlike lettuce, however endive will tolerate heat better, but will grow faster in cold weather.
DIRECT SOW
- Seed Depth: Sow Endive Seed and cover ever so lightly.
- Germination soil temperature: should be 60-65F (16-18)C.
- Days to Germination: 5-7 days at correct soil temperature.
- Sow Indoors 8 weeks before last frost.
- For an even crop- sow the seed by staggering every two weeks from spring to early summer and from late summer to fall.
- For the Winter garden: Sow the seed about two months before the first frost in the fall. These Endive plants (Fall grown) that are subjected to a few minor frosts will have a richer, less bitter flavor than the Spring grown plants.
GROWING CONDITIONS:
- pH range: 5.5 7.0
- Growing soil temperature: should be 45-65F (7-18) C.
- Spacing in beds 12 is usually recommended, however Endive will self-blanch (and be more tender) if spaced 8-10.
- Watering: Moderate in the summer plantings. Light other plantings.
- For best endive quality, grow in cool weather, plant them in sandy or loosely worked soil.
