2006 All-America Flower & Vegetable Award Winners

The 2006 season will be an exciting one with many new introductions. Our summer has been spent traveling to Californias west coast for the annual trail gardens, and other parts of our great country to see how selected seeds do in all parts of the country.

One of our favorite places that we visited was Ball Seed Co. for their Centennial Celebration. Their Gardens were breathtaking, with all of their plants and design. The program of the AAS Winners starts in Illinois where seeds are tested and sent to trail gardens around the country to see which varieties stand up to the elements in region after region. Only the most worthy and those that have a wide availability are bestowed with an AAS Winner status. Also this year a new category was designed to test flowers and vegetables that perform best when grown under cool conditions. For example, pansies grow and flower abundantly in the southern states during the fall and winter.

The AAS Cool Season Bedding Plant Trail is conducted in the fall and spring during 14 months of testing. Qualities such as length of bloom, cold tolerance, winter hardiness and spring recovery are evaluated. Gardeners living in the South can rely upon CSBP winners to perform during the winter months. In the North, gardeners will continue to use all the AAS Winners, as well as this new Category to extend their growing season well into the fall.

Wave Petunias

The original Wave Petunias are the low-growing ground-cover type that also trail and hang over walls and baskets. If you are wanting a mounding and spreading petunia, the Easy Wave Petunias are your best choice. Easy Waves are less sensitive to day length for flowering. Tidal Wave Petunias are the hedgiflora type that grows up and out. Tidal Waves work best for large landscape and large containers. Use a slow release fertilizer as Waves are vigorous and require more feed than grandiflora and multiflora types. This fertilizer will give your plants the extra long term support needed to perform as no other petunia.

Trapping, Baiting and Collecting a Garden Enemy - Slugs.

Slugs have been the bane of gardeners since gardening began. They thrive in cool moist soil, the very same soil that the seedlings and young tender plants they eat thrive in. Unfortunately there isn't really anything out that will totally eliminate slugs altogether. There is hope with several techniques that can be employed to protect your garden from these pests, and minimize the damage these beasts can wreak on your garden. First try Snail tape, it serves as a barrier. It is tape of elemental copper backing mat holds a natural mild electrical charge that slugs and snails won't cross. This tape only works well on a raised bed or container garden. Lay this tape on the outside edges of your garden. Another option for those who like to organic garden, and recycle, is a barrier of various organic materials: crushed eggshells, ash, soot. Smooth a line a few inches wide around the area you want to protect. Apply a two-inch wide line of this around it. Another way is to use these next hints together. Tapping slugs as the first thing I ever learned about gardening from my grandfather. Place beer containers all around your garden, then gather up a few tubs, like margarine or yogurt containers. Bury these between your rows, so that the edges are about an inch up off the soil. This will keep beetles out, since beetles eat slugs, we want these beetles safe. When the slugs climb in they get stuck and die without any food. Baiting is broken down into several categories. There are many commercially available with baits and poisons, most contain aluminum sulfate, they might be worth looking into but are not the only option. Slugs like to eat where it is dark and moist, try placing lettuce leaves between your rows, then each morning go out with tongs and a bucket of salt water and flip over the lettuce and gather the pests up, or use a few squares of wet cardboard or old wet carpet strips, same thing each morning go out and turn over and collect the slugs. Collection will not eliminate the slugs, but combined with baiting it will help a lot. Also, slugs do have natural enemies. Frogs and toads love slugs.

Snap Beans Connect us to the Past.

Snap Green Beans Green beans are as ubiquitous to the American table as mashed potatoes or broccoli. They offer a splash of color for your plate, and their long, slender silhouette dresses up even the most humble meal. Botanically speaking, all snap beans are members of the legume family. Break one of these beans in half and listen for the snap thus their name. They are often called string beans because of early varieties had strings that ran along the seams of the pods. Modern varieties are often bred to be stringless, so this is no longer so much of a concern. Whats unique about snap beans is that they're entirely edible. Most beans have tough, fibrous pods, and must be shelled, however snap beans have tender, slightly sweet tasting pods.
