How To Grow Mimulus From Seeds

Germination Tips

  • If starting Mimulus ( Monkey Flower ) indoors then the process should be done about two to three months in advance.
  • The seeds should be imbibed by placing the seeds (within soil) in a plastic bag, then placing in the fridge for three weeks.
  • Seeds should then be sown out into the light at a temperature of 68-74; they normally take from one to three weeks to germinate. The seedlings should be transplanted following the last frost of spring .
  • Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays.
  • Do not cover the seed.
  • After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination.
  • Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 14-30 days.
  • Start 5-8 weeks before the last frost.
  • Mimulus is not frost tolerant.
  • Or when growing monkey musk and other Mimulus outdoors from seed they should be sown on the surface towards the end of winter.
  • Musk likes to grow in sunny areas of the garden, though in very hot area they prefer partially shaded areas in the afternoon. The soil that Monkey Musk grows in should be moist and rich with a slightly acidic to neutral.

Growing Seedling Information:

  • When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 3 pots.
  • Gradually acclimate your young plants to the outdoors a few weeks before planting after all risk of frost. Prefers afternoon shade in warm climates. Do so by placing your plants an hour a day to start for a couple of days and then increase by 3 hours. Gradually increase to 8 hours per day and always in a protected area, with sun but NOT Full sun to start.
  • Plant 9-12 apart.
  • For best results, provide a moist well-drained soil in partial shade.
  • Do not allow to dry out and deadhead regularly.
