Flower Garden Tips on Growing Babys Breath From Seed

Dainty single clouds of delicate flowers, 8" tall, spread 12", that bloom profusely in summer covering themselves in clusters of tiny single or double flowers. Use for an airy look in borders or for trailing in a container or on walls .

  • Stage 1:

(days 1-6) Lightly cover the seed with coarse vermiculite only as seeds require light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 68 F/20 C.
  • Stage 2:

(days 7-14) After seedlings emerge lower the temperature to 58-60 F/15 C and place seedlings in a bright and well-ventilated area. Fertilize with 75 ppm N to promote strong growth.
  • Stage 3:

(days-15-25) Maintain plants at 58-60 F/15 C and fertilize at 150 ppm N using a well balanced calcium nitrate based formulation. It is best to water early in the day to prevent botrytis.
  • Stage 4:

(days 26-31) Reduce fertilizer to prepare the plants for transition to the final container. Plants should never be allowed to dry out.
GARDEN HINTS: Temperature: Optimum growing temperature is 58-60F/15 C, but plants tolerate higher temperatures. Higher temperatures, especially > 86 F/30 C, will reduce flowering Light: Gypsophila does best in full sun in cool summer areas or partial sun in warm summer areas. Add lime to strongly acid soils BEFORE planting.

INDOOR SOW

can be done 6 weeks before last frost. You must be very careful when transplanting these little plants, they have deep carrot like roots which are not easy to replant. They do not like being disturbed.

Germination is 7-14 days.

GARDEN HINTS: Sow again in middle and late summer for fall blooms, as they are fairly frost hardy. Useful in edging, carpeting, bulb cover and in rock gardens. Well drained and average soil is preferred. Full sun is best, but can be grown in light shade. Harvest when 70% of the flowers in spray are open.
