Torenia fournieri

|25 Pelleted Seeds|

Torenia Kauai Magenta will give you hot fuchsia wishbone flowers with white throats.  Kauai offers the fullest complement of vivid colors including unique Magenta and Lemon Drop. Blooms will attract butterflies and hummingbirds.  The series grows about 2 in shorter than the Clown Series. Gardeners also value this Torenia for its superior performance in extreme heat and humidity, and exotic appearance in small garden settings, mixed combos and color bowls; also great for indoor containers. A great shade performer, this is an alternative to traditional impatiens. Torenias thrive in the Louisiana summer no matter how hot, humid or rainy the weather. This is not surprising when we consider that the original species is native to forests in tropical Southeast Asia. They bloom from spring to late summer or early fall and prefer partly shaded beds. So if you live in a climate similar to Louisiana Torenia should do as well.  Torenia is a bushy plant with soft, succulent stems and serrated leaves of medium green about an inch long. The height is around 12 to 16 inches. Abundant tiny seeds are produced, and under the right conditions it is not unusual to see volunteer seedlings show up in locations where torenias grew the previous summer. These are easily removed or transplanted to locations where you want them to grow. I’ve never known the plant to become a nuisance. Torenia does best in containers, since it doesn't like to sit in dry soil.

Tips on How to Grow Torenia from Seeds

Germination

  • Start Torenia seeds about 6-8 weeks before the last frost date.

  • Torenia does not transplant well, so seeds should be started in peat or paper pots.
  •  Place 2-4 seeds per cell , use a biodegradable pot  (as Torenia do not want their roots disturbed.) or make one yourself from toilet paper rolls, cut the roll in half and make four cuts in the roll, 1/3 of the way up. Fold in the bottom like you would close a box. Fill them with a light potting soil, pack it down with your fingers, add seed  slices, fill with soil and then plant the seed 1/2-1 "/" deep.
  •  Do Not Cover Seeds. Torenia is one of those plants that needs light to germinate

  • Keep the soil moist and relatively warm (70 degrees F.) until the seeds germinate.

  •  Pinch the plant when it has 3-4 set of true leaves or about 2 inches tall.
