200 Seeds| The white and lavender Rocky Mountain Columbine was designated the official state flower of Colorado in 1899.  Blue is a symbol of the sky, white represents snow, and yellow symbolizes Colorado's gold mining history. Height: 24-36 inches Spacing: 16-18 inches Light: Full Sun to Part Shade Soil Moisture: Medium USDA Zone: 3a-8b . Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.  It is a fabulous addition to rock gardens or flower borders and also makes a lovely cut flower. A favorite of hummingbirds who are able to access the tip of the petal's narrow spur which contains nectar. USDA Zone 3-9.

How to Plant Columbine Seeds

  • Sow seed and press into soil, however do not cover as light is needed to germinate.

  • Columbine germinates best with stratification, a process of subjecting seeds to moist/cold treatment to break the seeds' dormancy. To stratify, sow seeds into moistened soil and place the container in plastic bag in the refrigerator or freezer for about 3 weeks. Seeds can then be taken out and germinated outdoors, in a sunny window, or under grow lights. Columbine also requires light to germinate. Be sure to simply press seeds into soil surface (instead of covering with soil.) The process described above should give you the best results, but note that your Columbine seeds may germinate fine without the stratification treatment.
  •  Germination will take 21-29 days, Keep at 67-71° F.

  • You can direct sow Columbines, with 3-5 seeds per sow spot, space 6-20 inches apart, thin when 3-4 true leaves are present and leave the strongest seedling.

  • Growing Columbines only requires full sun in mild climates, with partial shade where the temperatures are warm-hot. Keep soil moist and tolerates moderate water.
