Product Description

Aquilegia Vulgaris

30 Seeds |  A popular Perennial with long lasting blooms,  A favorite of hummingbirds who are able to access the tip of the petal's narrow spur which contains nectar. Aquilegia Vulgaris Nora Barlow is marked by spurless, fully double pink blooms which look like small dahlias. This variety is one of the few Columbines with double flowers and no spurs. Once Nora Barlow begins blooming, expect small clusters of pink flowers for 4 - 6 weeks. The flowers either face outwards or are nodding. Columbines make excellent flowers for cutting.  The hummingbirds and butterflies love Columbine, but usually both deer and rabbits leave it alone.  Most varieties of Columbines are profuse self seeders yielding a new crop of volunteers the following spring. Collected seeds produced from hybrid plants may not hold true in form to their parents.USDA Zone 3-9. Height 24-36 inches .

How to Plant Columbine Seeds

  • Sow seed and press into soil, however do not cover as light is needed to germinate.

  • Columbine germinates best with stratification, a process of subjecting seeds to moist/cold treatment to break the seeds' dormancy. To stratify, sow seeds into moistened soil and place the container in plastic bag in the refrigerator or freezer for about 3 weeks. Seeds can then be taken out and germinated outdoors, in a sunny window, or under grow lights. Columbine also requires light to germinate. Be sure to simply press seeds into soil surface (instead of covering with soil.) The process described above should give you the best results, but note that your Columbine seeds may germinate fine without the stratification treatment.
  •  Germination will take 21-29 days, Keep at 67-71° F.

  • You can direct sow Columbines, with 3-5 seeds per sow spot, space 6-20 inches apart, thin when 3-4 true leaves are present and leave the strongest seedling.

  • Growing Columbines only requires full sun in mild climates, with partial shade where the temperatures are warm-hot. Keep soil moist and tolerates moderate water.
