Product Description

Aquilegia Vulgaris

30 Seeds |  This is an old fashioned cottage garden with lots of charm. This Columbine is also known as Magpie Columbine or Granny's Bonnet Columbine. It truly is one of the few flowers that make you want to look twice. Create an eye-catching display with the lovely flowers on this old-fashioned variety of Columbine. This plant will create a beautiful clump in the spring and early summer with beautiful deep purple almost black sepals and outstanding white corollas. Collected seeds produced from hybrid plants may not hold true in form to their parents. Columbine plants will self-sow if seed pods are left, however, plants do much better if spent flowers are removed.USDA Zone 3-9. Height 24-30 inches .

How to Plant Columbine Seeds

  • Sow seed and press into soil, however do not cover as light is needed to germinate.

  • Columbine germinates best with stratification, a process of subjecting seeds to moist/cold treatment to break the seeds' dormancy. To stratify, sow seeds into moistened soil and place the container in plastic bag in the refrigerator or freezer for about 3 weeks. Seeds can then be taken out and germinated outdoors, in a sunny window, or under grow lights. Columbine also requires light to germinate. Be sure to simply press seeds into soil surface (instead of covering with soil.) The process described above should give you the best results, but note that your Columbine seeds may germinate fine without the stratification treatment.
  •  Germination will take 21-29 days, Keep at 67-71° F.

  • You can direct sow Columbines, with 3-5 seeds per sow spot, space 6-20 inches apart, thin when 3-4 true leaves are present and leave the strongest seedling.

  • Growing Columbines only requires full sun in mild climates, with partial shade where the temperatures are warm-hot. Keep soil moist and tolerates moderate water.
