This
applies whether it is a large garden with dramatic themes or a
single plant on the kitchen windowsill. With such a wide variety
of plants available and in-depth information, it is natural that
more imagination is being used to create our garden, even a wild
flower seed garden. Newer flowers and plants encourage new combinations
of color and texture with the old have, for many gardeners, lifted
the level of gardening to an art form.
Nurturing
our gardens has also had an increased impact of nurturing our
communities, through conversation, sharing and enhanced connection
amongst those with whom we share our small corner of the world.
If there is one truth about gardening in the United States, it
is that there is no defining garden. The centers of many gardens
have displays of annuals
and perennials,
which collectively offer an almost unrivaled choice of brilliantly
colored blooms, across a wide range of gardens.
The
differences between annuals and perennials are not always obvious
and plants such as poppies, delphiniums have a foot in both camps.
Their cultivation and life cycles however are very different.
Annual plants have a frenetic life with only a short time to grow,
flower, and set seed to ensure the next generation. They have
no means of living through hard times except as seeds, so they
must complete their life cycle in a single season. There are many
different representatives in most plant families, some like marigolds
and sunflowers are homey and familiar, where cleome will satisfy
a different taste.
Annuals
are divided into two categories, hardy and half hardy, Hardy annuals
tolerate frost, though severe frost and cold may kill them. Hardy
annuals include calendula, California poppies to mention just
a few. They provide the gardener with the quickest and least expensive
way to color a garden. Half-hardy annuals are usually raised from
seed and planted when the danger of frost has passed. Examples
of these would be, marigolds, annual
asters and nemesia. There are also tender-perennials that we see
as annuals; among these are petunias, bedding plant salvias and
snapdragons.
