Cherry color for a hot summer selection with eye.  Heatwave Vincas have a dwarf plant habit and keep this even under intense heat. They have a large flower size and a controlled habit for a wonderful retail and garden presentation. Heatwave is bred to grow well in cool temperarures, more so than other vincas,  and to present an outstanding performance under sunny, hot and dry conditions..Catharanthus roseus, commonly known as the Madagascar periwinkle or rosy periwinkle, is another name for Vinca. Annual Vinca, or annual Periwinkle, are heat loving annuals that produce large, flat flowers over glossy green foliage. Excellent branching and garden performance. Garden height 10-12 inches, width 8-10 inches.

Tips on How to Grow Vinca from Seeds

Germination

  • Start Vinca  - sow seeds about 10-12 weeks before the last frost date scheduled in your area.

  • Cover seed lightly with growing medium. 2-3 seeds per individual peat or fiber pots. Vinca needs darkness to germinate
  • Seed is slow to germinate (10-21 days)  and sensitive to light, best to place seed in cells and press lightly to cover, then place tray inside of black plastic bag, keep at 75-80°F.
  • After seeds germinate place the tray in full bright sunlight until the 3-4 true leaves have developed.
  • Transplant to cell packs or larger containers after true leaves appear. Harden off and transplant outside after the last frost.
  • Vinca  needs 8-10 hours of direct sunlight every day. In southwest desert climates and the hottest regions of the deep south, afternoon shade is preferred. Vinca plants grow best in well-drained soil with average to low fertility. Vinca can tolerate drought, and high heat. In hot, humid climates 'Cora,' 'Solar,' and 'Viper,' vincas perform best.
  • Vinca flowers attract many butterflies. Can be deer and rabbit resistant in most areas.
