Product Description

Aquilegia Vulgaris

30 Seeds |A very attractive yellow columbine with showy yellow flowers. It's native range includes Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and northwestern Mexico.  This columbine will adapt to shady conditions, but it will thrive in sunny locations in fairly average garden soil.  The selection Denver Gold® was a Plant Select® recommendation in 2001 and quickly gained popularity for its ability to grow in a wide range of light conditions as well as soil types. Most varieties of Columbines are profuse self seeders yielding a new crop of volunteers the following spring.  The luminous yellow flowers are large with long spurs, giving them a distinctive butterfly appearance in the garden. Great news for mountain gardeners as – Denver Gold® grows easily up to an elevation of 9,000 feet. Collected seeds produced from hybrid plants may not hold true in form to their parents.USDA Zone 3-9. Height 24-36 inches .

How to Plant Columbine Seeds

  • Sow seed and press into soil, however do not cover as light is needed to germinate.

  • Columbine germinates best with stratification, a process of subjecting seeds to moist/cold treatment to break the seeds' dormancy. To stratify, sow seeds into moistened soil and place the container in plastic bag in the refrigerator or freezer for about 3 weeks. Seeds can then be taken out and germinated outdoors, in a sunny window, or under grow lights. Columbine also requires light to germinate. Be sure to simply press seeds into soil surface (instead of covering with soil.) The process described above should give you the best results, but note that your Columbine seeds may germinate fine without the stratification treatment.
  •  Germination will take 21-29 days, Keep at 67-71° F.

  • You can direct sow Columbines, with 3-5 seeds per sow spot, space 6-20 inches apart, thin when 3-4 true leaves are present and leave the strongest seedling.

  • Growing Columbines only requires full sun in mild climates, with partial shade where the temperatures are warm-hot. Keep soil moist and tolerates moderate water.
