aaslogo.jpgAAS Winner. These are the garden columbines. Like the Russell Lupines and other definitive groups of perennials, the McKana Columbines have never been surpassed. With clear, bright-colored flowers, these are sizable plants, growing up to 32" or more. Their show in the garden can be truly spectacular. These famous flowers were bred by combining both the North American native columbines with others from abroad. The McKanas include the famous all-red Crimson Star, a major hummingbird plant, and some of the unique fully-double hybrids..  Flowers are attractive to hummingbirds. Removing spent flowers will increase the blooming time. Columbines are relatively short lived, allow some of the plants to go to seed and self sow. Leaf miners or sawfly may disfigure the leaves around flowering time. Simply trim off the ugly foliage and the plants will grow fresh leaves.Columbine love full sun to partial shade, normal soil or sandy is best.  Height 14-18 inches, spread 12-18 inches. Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.USDA Zone 3-9.

How to Plant Columbine Seeds

  • Sow seed and press into soil, however do not cover as light is needed to germinate.

  • Columbine germinates best with stratification, a process of subjecting seeds to moist/cold treatment to break the seeds' dormancy. To stratify, sow seeds into moistened soil and place the container in plastic bag in the refrigerator or freezer for about 3 weeks. Seeds can then be taken out and germinated outdoors, in a sunny window, or under grow lights. Columbine also requires light to germinate. Be sure to simply press seeds into soil surface (instead of covering with soil.) The process described above should give you the best results, but note that your Columbine seeds may germinate fine without the stratification treatment.
  •  Germination will take 21-29 days, Keep at 67-71° F.

  • You can direct sow Columbines, with 3-5 seeds per sow spot, space 6-20 inches apart, thin when 3-4 true leaves are present and leave the strongest seedling.

  • Growing Columbines only requires full sun in mild climates, with partial shade where the temperatures are warm-hot. Keep soil moist and tolerates moderate water.
