Flower Garden – Tips on Growing Carnation From Seeds
Commonly referred to some as the perpetual carnation with multi-pedaled flower that can bloom all year in certain climates.SOW INDOORS OR DIRECT SOW
- Indoors-8-10 weeks before average last day of frost.
- Seed requires light to germinate - press lightly into soil surface and do not cover, keep moist.
- Until the first true leaves appear, try not to water directly from overhead.
- Transplant outdoors after any danger of frost is past, or sow directly outside 2 weeks before last frost, For a showy planting, do groups of 3-4 seedlings.
- Outdoor Sowing: Sow the Carnation seeds early in the spring.
- Do make sure that the soil is not too wet.
- Space seedlings about12" apart.
- Germination period is 10-14 days at 70ºF. You will find that carnation plants are very easy to grow.
They will grow big, full blooms on strong, straight stems. They prefer full sun and a rich, well-drained soil. Water them during dry periods, once or twice per week. By adding a general purpose fertilizer once or twice a month you will ensure beautiful blooms. Carnations will grow 16-18" and make great borders or with a smaller variety a good edging. Space plants 12" apart. Once your Carnations are established, they will grow well and bloom from the spring and throughout the summer.
