How to Grow Winter Squash

Squash is healthful, with lots of fiber, vitamin A and beta-carotene. All that and it's delicious too. Acorn, buttercup, butternut, spaghetti and pumpkin all fit into this category. Winter squash are garden gorillas, the vines are so vigorous they will explore and take over vast amounts of garden if you do not plan ahead. You can't contain them once they get growing, so to best contain them, do this by sowing the seed along the edge of the garden. As the vines grow, direct them outward, away from the rest of the garden. Keep them pointing in the direction of something that might look good covered with vines. These plants like it hot, in cool-weather regions, winter squash will perform better if you warm the soil with black plastic before planting and then leave the plastic in place, not only to maintain soil temperature, but also to control any weeds, cut a hole in the plastic and dig deep enough to that the plant will be at the same height it grew in the pot, then set the transplant in place being careful not to disturb the roots. Firm the soil around the plant.
