Watercress is a hardy perennial European herb. Nasturtium officinale of the family Cruciferae mustard family- widely naturalized in North America, found in or around water. Often cultivated for the small, pungent leaflets, it is used as a peppery salad green or garnish. The ornamental plant whose common name is nasturtium is unrelated. Watercress is used in alot of cooking and salads.
Seeds may be planted outside a month before the last frost or indoors one to two months before frost free weather. If sown indoors transplant to pots when they reach 2-3" in height, then outdoors -close to water one month after the last frost. Once established, watercress can be propagated for more cuttings.
GARDEN HINTS: Watercress reaches picking size in five months, thinning may be eaten at two or three months.
