Vegetable Plant Families: With these vegetables noted as below, you can usually plan on spacing vegetable family members near one another, because relationships of vegetable plants within families are generally either positive or neutral. An exception to this rule is the tomato family. Some tomato family plants include tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant and peppers. Both tomatoes and potatoes grow well next to peppers and eggplants, but tomatoes and potatoes do not grow well next to each other.
- Beet Vegetable Family: Beet, spinach and swiss chard.
- Cabbage Vegetable Family: Arugula, broccoil, broccoli-raab, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, mizuna, mustard, pak choy, radish rutabaga and turnip.
- Carrot Vegetable Family: Carrot, celery, chervil, cilantro/coriander, dill, fennel, parsnip and parsley.
- Cucumber Vegetable Family: Cucumber, gourd, melon, summer and winter squash.
- Onion Vegetable Family: Asparagus, chive, garlic, leek, onion and scallion.
- Pea Vegetable Family: Beans, pea.
- Tomato Family: Eggplant, pepper, white potato, tomatillo and tomato.
