Leeks Seeds
How to Grow Leeks
Start long-season leeks indoors in late winter. Sow seeds in flats, and when the seedlings are about 2 inches tall, transplant them into individual growing cells. Fertilize once every 2 weeks with fish emulsion. Remove the leek seedlings from the growing flat, and gently tease the roots apart with your fingers, then trim the roots to about 2 inches. Use a hoe to dig a trench about 8 inches deep. Set the leeks in the trench, spacing them about 6 inches apart. Fill the trench with soil and press it firmly but gently in place. Mulch the plantings with grass clippings. Leek and potato soup on a chilly day is a great reason to grow these in the garden. They are easy on the digestive system and are frost hardy.
