This plant provides soft gray, almost white leaves that help show off other plants. In addition to those with bold, white leaves, look for the fine, feathery varieties that offer a more subtle contrast. Dusty miller does its best in full sun but will tolerate light shade. Flower Garden – Tips on Growing Dusty Miller From Seeds

This name is given to a lot of plants with gray-silver foliage. The Dusty Miller of one region may be unknown to another. Dusty Miller do produces flowers, however most home gardeners grow them for their fern-like, silvery foliage. They are often used in a flowerbed, or they are perfect for border edging.

    Germination:

    • Directly seed Dusty Miller into your garden 2-3 weeks before the last frost in your zone.
    • For an early start, sow Dusty Miller seeds indoors in seed trays or plug pots, 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
    • Keep the soil moist during the germination period. If starting indoors, we recommend using a heated germination mat.
    • DO NOT cover seed.
    • Soil temperature for germination 70-75°F
    • Days to Germinate: Can take 10-15 days at correct temperature.
    • Grow Dusty Miller in full sun to partial shade.
    • They grow well in rich, well drained soil, but will tolerate average soil. Mix in compost and manure prior to planting.
    • If growing as a perennial, select a location where they can grow undisturbed for years.
    • Dusty Miller can be grown as annuals, too.
    • Allow the soil to dry between watering. Once the top couple inches of soil is dry, water thoroughly. Add a general purpose fertilizer once or twice a month, especially in poor soils. Mulching around plants will help keep weeds down, make an attractive appearance, and provide nutrients to the plants.
    • Dusty Miller grow tall, 10" - 18" tall. They will produce flowers. Many people remove them, or pinch back the buds to promote leaf growth. Trim plants as desired, to maintain an attractive shape.
